Grocery

First what most of us think is important while doing Grocery shopping is Which one should I buy? Where to buy? etc etc
Assuming both wife and husband are new to US then it might be a little bit tough,
If your spouse has been in US for a while he/she will know many thing & you need not worry at all.

Early morning first thing we need is milk . Milk in US is measured in gallons and we get milk in cans .
There are different types available in milk to important classification is Organic and conventional milk.
I know your next question is what is this organic milk
Organic milk is from cows that have not been treated with bovine growth hormone (BGH) to increase milk production.

Usually any thing that is organic will cost high.It depends on which type you wish continue with.
Know types based of %
1. Whole milk
2. 2% milk
3. 1% milk
2% and 1% milk has less fat than in whole milk

This again depends on individual choice . How to decide regrading what you want to buy can be based on nutritional values, fat content, Protein, Fiber Content etc.

On Milk you can read this information by referring to the label displaying Nutritional information. You can find all details and number of servings etc. This should help you to decide
easily as you can chose all by your self which one is good for health based on your health conditions

Let me start with vegetables .....hummm this is because I am vegetarian

Usually most of buy get vegetables weekly once and if the store is far off then for two weeks.
Every place where Indians are more in number we will certainly find an Indian store . Every thing is available in US.

Lets me say one thing in the beginning most of us learn so called conversion math i.e. Dollar to Rupee

Let me tell you that if you convert everything from Dollar to rupee like that we fell every thing costly ..........This is normal in beginners.

Trust me we will be out this conversion very soon.Oh back to topic

Vegetables that are similar to what we use are Potato , Carrot, Cabbage, Tomato, Onions, Spring Onions, spinach, beans and capsicum so many other too

So these are available in US grocery stores also so need not worry about all these.

For lentils /daal etc you have to got to Indian stores only.

In vegetables also we have 2 type fresh once and frozen. Usually frozen cost less than the fresh once .

Usually its good to use fresh veggies only but just in case you don't feel like cutting vegetables or you are ill or may be you are busy you can keep a few frozen veggies handy. Main advantage you need not cut them

One more important point is in vegetables also we find organic section as mentioned before

Organic meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers etc .
So they are expensive than normal once .

Which type of oil to use ?
Your Options are:
  • corn oil
  • Olive oil
  • canola oil
  • Vegetable oil etc
This is again a choice. Generally olive oil is more costly than other types of Oil, and is not recommended to fry anything in it more than once. So once you use olive oil to fry anything, you will have to throw away the left over Oil.

So what most of them do is for frying they use either vegetable oil/corn oil/canola oil of their choice and normal day-day cooking use olive oil.

There are many other types of oil also available among them these are most common once used .
